Sunburn and overwatering produce damage that looks similar in photos, but the two conditions live on opposite ends of the care spectrum. Treating sunburn with more water, or overwatering with more shade, will make things worse. Here is how to tell them apart with confidence.

What does the damage look like on day one?

This is the fastest way to narrow it down. Sunburn damage appears suddenly and fully formed. You move a plant to a sunnier spot in the morning, and by afternoon a patch of leaf is scorched, pale, or papery. The damaged area does not change much after that first day—it dries out, turns brown or tan, and stays that way. Overwatering damage develops slowly. A leaf may look slightly translucent or yellowed one day, then soft the next, then collapse on the third. The progression is unmistakable once you know to watch for it.

How do I fix overwatering?

Overwatering requires faster, more decisive action because rot spreads.
